The Memorial Garden Proposal
A PLACE APART FOR MEDITATION AND REMEMBRANCE
On Armistice Day 2018, the Centenary of the cessation of hostilities on 11 November 1918, Lest Sligo Forgets, in partnership with Sligo County Council, formally broke ground for a permanent memorial to the 617 men and four women from County Sligo who died in the Great War 1914-1918.
Eight upright granite stone panels, engraved with the names of each of the dead and grouped by their town-land of origin, will form the centerpiece of the County Sligo Great War Memorial Garden to be developed on a site at Cleveragh Regional Park.
The County Sligo Great War Memorial Garden will be a place for remembering and reflecting upon the loss of so many lives. The memorial will be publicly accessible 24-hours a day.
Our campaign to raise €60,000 is currently underway to the match contributions from our public grant funding partners, and deliver this fitting and dignified Great War Memorial Garden for County Sligo.
It is envisaged that the project will be completed and officially opened in Autumn 2022.
