Today we remember those from Sligo who died on October 10th during the five years of the Great War 1914 - 1918.

  • 1918 Lizzie McLynn, Pound St., Sligo 

  • 1918 Joseph Walsh, Tourlestrane, Sligo

  • 1918 Patrick Walsh, Ballinafad & Liverpool

Mrs Allen and Lizzie McLynn will be remembered under Sligo Borough, with Emily Barlow named for Riverstown, Frederick Chrystal for Grange, Joseph Walsh remembered under Tourlestrane and Patrick Walsh named for Ballinafad on the eight sentinel stones of the County Sligo Great War Memorial Garden.

Pictured above is the crew of the RMS Leinster which was torpedoed and sank off Dublin bay on October 10th 1918. It is thought that 564 people were killed making it the greatest recorded loss of life in a single incident to occur in the Irish Sea. Six Sligo people are known to have perished in the attack.
